This painting is the result of employing the Surrealist idea of letting images arise from the subconscious. That makes it unusual for my works, many of which are very planned and furthermore organized around a particular magical idea (like Fire of Mars in the painting Elevation of Mars). Maybe that's why this painting is so dark--it arose from an occluded place, the subconscious, where we can't see with the clarity of daylight. The circle is very important in magic, so it became the organizing principle here. The central Moon disk features the necromancer and the spirit raised by the necromancer's incantations. The moon/circle can be a wall of protection but also a barrier. The necromancer's vision is limited to what stands before them. Outside of the circle and beyond the necromancer's perception are other spirits--many of them. Some might be protective, others hostile, and still others pretty much unknowable. They could be the spirits of ancestors, or they could be the spirits of demons or angels--or of other entities that we neither know nor comprehend.
The giclee prints are on 100% cotton archival fine art paper, colors are matched to the original by the artist, and they are signed on the back. The original acrylic painting is 18 x 24"/46 x 61cm on wood panel with a 1.5" profile, ready to hang.
