Voices of Our Ancestors
I've been inspired by rock art all over the world for years, and I decided to create my own using symbols from my subconscious rather than those of a particular culture. I wanted in this way to bring out the idea of rock art as a communication from our ancestors that might not always be immediately comprehensible but if nothing else, fires our appreciation for the mystery of communication and of who we are. I chose the typical red and black of rock art but also a green akin to lichen. I also incorporated some gold ink, which is visible mostly from the side, which for me stands for how we can sometimes notice what is most precious by viewing it obliquely rather than directly. This image was created with watercolor and ink.
The original mixed media painting is 15 x 22"/38 x 56cm on cotton archival paper and is ready to frame.
