The Poison Toad, Vessel Series
The Poison Toad in this surreal landscape painting stands for what is purified in this stage of alchemy. What is poisonous or noxious is cleansed through being soaked in Moon and heated and then arises purified. I choose this particular color for the toad based partly on a new poisonous species that was recently discovered, although the shape of the toad is that of a cane toad. The other reason for the color is that rust is often associated with this stage in alchemy. The Moon is the boat that holds the toad's reaction vessel and swims in the Moon sea. Instead of representing the purified toad as a white bird, I chose to use a white moth. It has shed all the impurities of the poisonous toad and so is able to fly free of it.
The waterlilies are of three colors--white, blue, and red. The blue flower represents the black stage of alchemy, the first part of it. The white stage is next and is followed by the red, which is the final end result of the Great Work. I used waterlilies to represent these stages because the flowers of these plants rise from the muck to lift themselves above it, pure and sweet. This painting is a continuation of my series Vessels and my work with magic realism.
