The Black Crow Occult Landscape Art Prints
Continuing with my interest in surreal landscape painting and magic realism, I chose to focus on the alchemical stage known as The Black Crow for this painting. This is one of the earliest stages in the alchemical process and is ruled by Saturn. For that reason, I selected a background that is cold and dry, since those are Saturn's Elemental properties. The Dry Valleys of Antarctica fit that to a T. However, I did decide to paint the background with colors I enjoy, the pink and periwinkle blue of dusk, rather than daylight colors of tan and grey.
The central image is of course a crow. But since lead and the color black are connected with both Saturn and the alchemical operation, I chose to feature a block of lead and a black moth (thinking of how in the story a moth flies out of the Devil's purse--I don't know if the moth was black or not, but to my mind, it was). The hourglass is there for two reasons. One is the mythological connection of Saturn with time (Chronos); he's often featured holding a scythe in one hand and an hourglass in the other. But also because the death association of Saturn fits with vanitas paintings' inclusion of timepieces, in particular, of hourglasses, symbolizing the brevity of life.
For me, the takeaway of this painting is "change now, for time is short."
The giclee prints are on 100% cotton archival fine art paper, colors are matched to the original by the artist, and they are signed on the back. The original acrylic painting is 18 x 24"/46 x 61cm on a panel with 1/8" profile has been sold.
