I've been wanting to work with more symbolism in my paintings while still incorporating landscapes, so I've switched to painting surreal landscapes. I started with the moon, one of my favorite symbols and images to paint. Because Moon is associated with Elemental Water, I painted the ocean with a night sky as the background. Since this is also the first in a series of paintings of vessels, I put the moon in a bottle. This was my first time painting glass, but I've done a lot of studying of the technique, so it came out okay. The luna moth seemed like an obvious symbols to associate with moon in magic realism. The crab is an old Moon connection and is featured on the Moon tarot card. Some consider it to represent the dreaming self or ideas and images arising from the subconscious. Needless to say, the crab is the symbol of the zodiacal sign Cancer, which is ruled by the Moon. I chose the blue crab as my model because I liked its colors.
The original acrylic painting is 18 x 24"/46 x 61cm on canvas with a 1.5" profile. The giclee prints are 12 x 16"/30 x 41cm on 100% cotton archival fine art paper, colors are matched to the original by the artist, and they are signed on the back.
